PIANO
PIANO automatically generates cutting plans for combinations of customer plates and assigns those combinations to existing slabs from the stockyard. It covers the nesting of customer plates into mother plates, the nesting of those mother plates into existing slabs, as well as the scheduling of those slabs for the cutting table. This nesting process must take a variety of - often conflicting - requirements into account: customer plate priorities, scrap minimization, slab unpiling optimization, downstream production management...
The main objectives of the integration of such a system into the daily planning practices of a plate producer are: A better due date performance by nesting customer plates corresponding with the most urgent customer orders first; a higher yield by minimizing the losses on the slabs and on the mother plates through the use of state-of-the-art optimization algorithms; a maximal productivity at the plate mill by maximizing the area of the mother plates; a better use of the slab yard by taking the available slabs into account while generating plate combinations; and finally faster generation of results by automating the whole nesting process.
PIANO is highly configurable and can easily be adapted to plant specific nesting rules. PIANO's flexible optimization algorithm uses exclusive scoring functions to direct the search and the optimization.
Our project focuses on the challenge of optimizing the furnace scheduling process for the different variants of the furnaces while maintaining the current conditions of the mill scheduling process. We are confident that difficulties in the furnace optimization for our ‘direct-charging material' will be resolved by the AIS solution.
